Director Ang Lee has spoken about “the power of movies to change the way we’re thinking.” Do films really have this sort of power and can they create lasting change? This course will focus on the concept of whether films can influence and transform society or if they merely reinforce pre-existing beliefs and norms.
We will look at film as a medium to convey messages, express points-of-view, and its attempt to influence public opinion. You will be asked to recognize, analyse and evaluate recurring issues, for example, the ways in which different racial groups, genders and relationships are portrayed. This course will encourage you to think critically about film and use visual evidence to support arguments.
