This course offers you an introduction to the basic elements of visual communication and the print world. You will learn the fundamentals of photography as you document important events from the school year. You will develop your communication skills through reporting, writing, presentations, and publications. We will focus on layout, desktop publishing and page design as well as on caption writing and headline construction. You will learn about color theory, typography, and the principles of good design. You will help choose the theme for the GIBS yearbook and you will combine photography and the written word to inform society and create parts of the GIBS yearbook. At the end you will have produced a piece of history valued by students, staff, and the whole school community.
In addition, we will focus on ethics in journalism, including libel, copyright, and proper use of trademarked materials. A special emphasis will be on staying organized, teamwork, critiquing, editing, and meeting authentic deadlines.
