Part of the course will focus on human rights in general.
Are human rights truly universal?
We will also focus on the human rights situation in Graz. Does Graz deserve the title "City of Human Rights"?
We will also discuss issues such as poverty, drug abuse, refugees, racism and discrimination. We will combine our theoretical knowledge with practical experience by visiting the Vinzidorf, taking a trip to Vienna to participate in a Shade Tour and using a wheelchair for an afternoon.
In another part of the course, you will gain practical experience in the field of social work. This means that only part of the course will take place in the classroom: you will be helping people in NGOs. You will be able to gain insight into the work with socially deprived people (Caritas/Vinzibus/Tafel Österreich) or help children from socially deprived or foreign backgrounds with their homework and tests (Isop/Lernbetreuung Eggenberg).
We will provide class time for reflection and discussion. Evaluation will be based on your practical work and your reflections on it.
