This course serves several purposes: Some students get for the first time in contact with “wet chemistry”; some students see this course as a preparation for the Matura; others think this is a good preparation for the medical entrance exam. And other students just take the course because they are interested in all chemistry electives.
The topics we deal with in this elective are mainly organic ones: Distillation of Crude Oil – Properties of Alkanes,
Chromatography (Paper/TLC), Solubility of Organic and Inorganic Substances, Titration (HCL vs. NaOH; Waterhardness/EDTA; Aspirin-ASA), Fat Extraction, Detection of Different Nutrients in Food, Analysis of Different Hydrocarbons and Oxygen Derivatives of Hydrocarbons, Esterfication reactions, Analysis of Different Polymers
